SIZING RULES OF THUMB

Find the right size shade for your lamp. Follow these tips for
correct measuring:
•Shade Dimensions are typically given Top, Bottom, and Height
measured on the SLANT.
•The taller the lamp, the larger the shade. Most table lamps take
a shade with a bottom diameter of 16" or 18". Floor lamps usually
take a shade with a bottom diameter of 18" or 21".

Measure the lamp from the bottom edge of its base to the top of its
stem to calculate its height. You'll want to choose a lamp shade with
a bottom diameter that is within 2 inches larger then the measured
height of your lamp.

(NEVER GO SMALLER IN SIZE AS THIS WILL MAKE YOU LAMP LOOK
OUT OF PROPORTION )

Determine the best diameter for your lamp shade. An ideal lamp shade
will measure within 3 inches larger than the height of the table
lamp. For an 18-inch table lamp, use a lamp shade with a bottom
diameter of 18 inches or larger up to 21 inches.

The diameter measures how long the bottom part of the lamp shade
extends from side to side. If you divided the bottom diameter mesurement
by two it will give you the mesurement of how far it will set from a wall etc.

An 18 inch shade divided by 2 = 9 inches. This will tell you where your lamp
will be centered on a talbe if it is next to a wall.

The width across the bottom is what is referred to as the lampshade
size.

There are times when the correct width of a shade does have the correct
height and exposes the harp parts at the bottom to the eye. In most cases
when this happens you can just replace the current harp with a shorter one
to take care of this problem instead of buying a larger shade.
(This is an easy and cheap fix and harps can be bought at most hardware
stores.)
